Advocating for the children. CASA Johnson County Kansas

September 24, 2016. Overland Park, Kansas — Akshay Anand, Karats CEO, discusses volunteering for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and the roles that CASA volunteers have to serve. Akshay’s business ‘Karats’ is a premier jewelry and watch retailer in Kansas City. As a successful business owner, Akshay commits himself to serving the community and frequently participates in philanthropic activities.

CASA is an organization whose mission is to empower neglected and abused children with a volunteer’s voice in court by finding a safe and permanent home for every child. It was founded in 1977, after Seattle Superior Court Judge David Soukup conceived the idea of appointing volunteers to voice out the best interests of these children in court. 50 citizens responded after he made a request for volunteers, and this became the start of the CASA movement.

In 1985, Johnson County CASA became a project of the Tenth Judicial District of Kansas and the National Council of Jewish Women. The project’s purpose was to alleviate the overloaded court system by advocating for neglected or abused children in court. The organization started recruiting and training community volunteers to serve the best interests of these children, and this legacy continues in the present.

CASA volunteers serve an important role by monitoring the children’s situation and reporting findings to the court. Every year, CASA volunteers within Wyandotte and Johnson Counties dedicate over 15,000 hours to these children, with each hour focused on the goal of giving every child a chance at happiness as well as the stability that all children need in order to thrive.

CASA volunteers are all specially-trained citizens who have received 30 hours of official training before they are assigned a case. The training program’s curriculum combines in-person and online delivery of information. The training covers five sessions, and each session has about 3 hours of self-guided work that must be completed online before the volunteer attends a 3-hour in-person classroom session. Volunteers are educated on a variety of topics, such as an overview of courtroom procedure from judges, attorneys and social workers, symptoms and effects of neglect and abuse, early childhood development, and cultural diversity.

A CASA volunteer’s main responsibility is to meet with the child or a sibling group regularly to develop a relationship with the child and determine his or her needs. Volunteers also need to meet with other people who have information about the child, such as parents, foster parents, counselors, social workers, and teachers. They need to review all records pertaining to the child, and submit a written report to the judge before each court hearing that has information about the child—helping the judge make a better, more informed decision about the child’s future.

A great thing about living in Kansas City metro is the wonderful local events that make it fun to attend.

Just in the past weekend I have attended, The Plaza Art Fair, American Royal BBQ and Water Fire on The Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri

I am looking forward to a busy Fall. In the Jewelry Industry and working at KARATS the privilege of making life long relationships is incomparable.

The Significant Milestone

A dream is yet a dream till efforts to move mountains become a reality and that, what was once conceived as a vision, has now become a reality. As one of my favorite quotes “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” by Lao Tzu keeps my diligent efforts everyday to take one step at a time moving forward in a direction where our vision and dreams exist. Today, I, “WE”, proudly introduce the Breitling brand to the Great State of Kansas. A dream that became reality through efforts comprehended by only a few. Conscious sacrifices in pursuing a dream, The American Dream, where anything is possible with the greatest of efforts directed towards a common goal.

Some may wonder, why the Breitling brand took this long and why OUR pursuit towards this exquisite and yet remarkable Swiss watch brand to bring to KARATS. To them, WE say, It is the dream to fly high, to break the status quo, to push through the unchartered territories of space and air where possibilities are limitless. It resonates with OUR vision to achieve greatness at everything we do. Push forward with a goal to be excellent. Breitling is such a brand. Fearless and Roars Excellence. It is a love affair where one just stares into the others eyes without blinking and the hearts feel the warmth. Such is a relation for our endurance for excellence.

While WE cherish this important milestone there are a few that have to be acknowledged. For without them the journey to a thousand miles wouldn’t be possible. I express my thanks to the KARATS Team. Without them I am insignificant. Then I express my gratitude to our wonderful customers and friends for their unwavering support, trust and utmost faith in us. With your love and support we will continue to conquer mountains and what may come our way. We express supreme gratitude to you and humbled that you choose us and honor us with your presence. Then, we honor, our industry friends, designers, manufacturers and supporters. We are all indeed a family. The family that sticks together no matter what may come. We are thankful to you always for being the brick wall we can always lean on. You all continue to guide us, show us the path and share the wisdoms to see KARATS prosper. It is with your humility and compassion we continue to move forward.

I and everyone at KARATS is personally grateful to the Lord in The Heavens. Without your sheer blessings and infinitive wisdom we cannot even begin to be capable to dream the dreams we dream to conquer. All we ask and pray is for the grace and infinite wisdom upon us. We are grateful to our families for letting us expand our wings and fly to whatever heights we wish to go. You all are our biggest cheerleaders and we gain our strength by knowing that you always believe in us.

Last but not least, I personally honor my grandparents, I know the struggles you endured as you grew your business half the way across the world in India and now it stands as one of the oldest and finest. You remained faithful to righteousness and built it on the highest of standards. While I do miss you both everyday, I may live my life the way you did with the highest standards and honoring you by leading the path for excellence at what we so lovingly do.

My Invocation to Leawood Rotary

On August 25th, 2011 I gave the following Invocation to the Rotary Club of Leawood that I belong too. A couple years down the road, I am remembering a great soul and an American Soldier who gave his life for our freedoms. Leawood Rotary Club is an Organization that gives its time, resources and efforts in making a difference in the world. I am a proud Leawood, KS Rotarian. Where we put Service Above Self.

INVOCATION:

They say that whatever we do comes with a price….a price for freedom, liberties and living our “dreams” is far higher than what we as individuals can EVER realize living where we live.

This nation has been built on principals of Service, Hard Work, Innovation and to stand for righteousness. Just the other day i was seeing a documentry of the days after september 11th when the United States went into Afghanistan, it really changed a lot of perspectives for me of how “this war against terrorism” was conducted as opposed to the many we have fought before.

I was amazed of how the United States only sent 7 men, yes ONLY 7 MEN from CIA to make pacts with the Northern Alliance Group that rebeled the Taliban before many other troops started coming in…..

Making a Long Story Short, it amazed me how the US conducted Drone wars against taliban and insurgents that came to our land and to our homes and tried to disrupt our way of life. Shortly after this documentry one morning i got a text message and it said “Brother Mason Died in Afghanistan”

I was taken back, i was quite and practically numb the entire day…. Matt Mason was my fraternity brother at Northwest Missouri State and was one of the 30 Navy Seals that was killed in Afghanistan and we as a country lost an honorable man, a great member of our community and he leaves behind 2 boys about the ages of 4 and 5 and an expecting daughter in the next month or so.

This man, gave his life for OUR FREEDOM, FOR OUR LIBERTIES and for our “DREAMS” that we living HERE cannot even begin to comprehend what it takes to fight those wars. That man was an honorable individual that fought for you and me amoung many others that have gone before and will continue to pay the BIGGEST PRICE for our FREEDOM.

Lets take a moment of silence and remember those that we know or those that have lost their lives so we all can live freely.

Friends, Family and a good time

I enjoyed a wonderful Persian meal cooked by my friend Dr. Shaya Ansari. Shaya who works as a Radiologist at St. Lukes is heavily involved within the Kansas City community and shares his experience and medical teachings for the betterment of humanity as a whole.

Life is a bliss when you are in the company of wonderful family and friends. It was a moment of many memories as my parents who are visiting me also joined for this fabulous meal.

Life is all about love, giving and sharing. I take immense joy in knowing that I am in the company of great minds and people that are here to uplift me and make me better.

One World !!!

Waking up to the many well wishes and pictures of the celebration of the Chinese New Year on Facebook and rejoicing in starting the Year of the Snake, I have been thinking about some important notions that surround us today.

1 – We live in a globalized world. We have to think beyond our own boxes and our own surroundings, we learn through others and share what we have with them.

2 – Humanity will embrace every thing positive and will take every chance to be a part of new beginnings, where the Old is left behind and New makes the path ahead.

3 – United States is a true example of how we live in a Melting Pot where we are PEOPLE before being Europeans, Chinese, Indians, Catholics, Christians, Hindus or Jews. We celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Diwali, Chinese New Year and remember great leaders that have shaped our future such as Dr. Martin Luther King and President Abraham Lincoln to name a few. Where we see people as people, despite the cultural, religious and color of our skins that make us unique and different. We importantly embrace humanity over all other denominations.

4 – How those truly leave a better world behind are truly those that have shaped Humanity for a better tomorrow. The work of Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Bill & Malenda Gates Foundation in conjunction with Rotary International and President Bill Clinton through his Clinton Foundation is shaping the world to leave a better tomorrow.

As I have been thinking about this more today, I am reminded of what our founding fathers build this great nation on.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

I wish you the Very Happiness, which is truly the Highest form of Health and an important purpose of life.
