Misty, Scott + Karats Jewelers: A Perfect Match in Kansas City

There’s no better marriage in the bridal business – or any business – than two family-owned, multi-generation companies with integrity and tradition at their core. Karats, our exclusive partner in the Kansas City area, is a sixth-generation jeweler reflecting the same mindset and values that have carried us through the fine jewelry world since 1890. Much like Kirk Kara’s, the Karats legacy is one of longstanding authenticity and trust, and that’s why many Kansas couples turn to them for their designer engagement ring needs.

One such couple is Misty and Scott, who tied the knot this past fall. Misty fell in love with the Charlotte collection practically at first glance. She knew it was The One, as sapphires and clean lines Kirk Kara sapphire and diamond engagement ring and wedding band setwere details she had always envisioned in her perfect ring. Ironically enough, she wasn’t as quick to fall for her husband. Misty’s cousin Sandy orchestrated a chance meeting by inviting Scott, her neighbor, along on a family trip. She had every intention of getting them together, but it took some time for Misty to come around. Six months and some reluctance later, Misty finally gave in and they began dating. Like many love stories, things progressed quickly from there.

With plans to get engaged, they tracked down Karats Jewelers in Overland Park as an authorized Kirk Kara retailer and made the hour-long trek there to see the Charlotte designs in person. Sure enough, Misty’s love for the collection was confirmed, which came as no surprise to Karats owner Akshay Andy Anand. “Kirk’s designs and use of color sets him apart from all other brands in the engagement ring business,” he says. “Their bridal jewelry reflects the many tastes and preferences of today’s couple.” Despite spending quite some time looking at engagement rings that day, Misty kept going back to the one she had come to see. The decision was made and she got fitted on the spot.

Unbeknownst to his bride-to-be, Scott purchased the ring that day, and soon, he surprised her with a proposal in front of his son and her cousin Sandy’s children, who sweetly captured the whole romantic gesture on video. Misty was incredulous, as she had just been fitted for the ring. She even asked if it was real! “It was absolutely stunning,” says Misty. “He had bought the ring the day we looked at it. I had no idea. Of course, I said yes!” Thanks to Karats Jewelers, Scott was able to expedite his purchase and make the proposal happen much sooner than Misty could imagine.

“As a sixth generation at Karats to work with another family-owned operation, I know that quality and customer service are at the forefront,” says Mr. Anand. “We appreciate the outstanding customer service and the dedication to detail for each order we place. Our customers love their beautiful rings and are grateful for the extra effort it takes to make the delivery deadlines.”

“The collections represent, with a flourish, designs of past decades such as Art Deco and Turn of the Century in a way that honors the sentiments so many attach to sweet memories of the past,” continues Mr. Anand. “The clean lines of this era’s creations display just enough artful embellishment to convey to everyone that true craftsmen are still at work at Kirk Kara.”

As for Misty and Scott, they are the quintessential Karats + Kirk Kara couple. After meeting Kirk in person at a Karats trunk show, Scott purchased an extra band and surprised Misty with a Dahlia for Valentine’s Day. “I love the blue sapphires in both collections. The delicate designs amaze me almost daily,” says Misty. “I receive many compliments on my wedding bands and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I am a Kirk Kara girl!” If you’re shopping for exquisite rings and fine jewelry in the Kansas City area, Karats Jewelers is your must-stop shop. Their heritage is set in stone, and their commitment to customer service is second to none. That’s exactly what Kirk Kara is all about.

Why Platinum ? A Post from Tacori.com

I thought to share the importance of Why Platinum? Our friends at Tacori have done a great job in explaining Why Platinum is a better metal. This post is from one of their Blogs. You can visit the link to the actual Blog Post at the bottom of this page. In the spirit to promote a better metal I fully voice the same recommendations as our friends at Tacori have done.

You have many choices to make when you’re selecting your engagement ring and wedding bands, and your decision about which metal to wear is one of the most important.

There are pros and cons to every metal option, including personal preference and pricing. And no matter which metal you select, we know that you want to make an informed decision about the best metal for you. If you’re debating between white gold and Platinum, here a few of the reasons why Platinum is the premium choice for Tacori engagement rings and wedding bands.

To start, Platinum’s naturally white color won’t fade or change color over time. This means, no maintenance is required to maintain a white hue over the lifetime of the ring.

Compared to a white gold ring, it’s important to note that gold itself is naturally occurring in nature as a soft yellow metal. In order to change the color from yellow to create a white gold ring, the natural yellow gold must be mixed with other white metals – also known as an “alloy” – to lessen the yellow appearance and strengthen the gold into a formula that can be used for jewelry purposes. After the white gold alloy is created, the initial white color of a white gold ring does often fade over time, and requires maintenance over the life of the ring to restore the white color to a showroom finish. This is different from a Platinum ring, which will not require maintenance to maintain its white hue.

Additionally, the metal purity of Platinum is approximately 95% pure Platinum, compared to a white gold alloy, which is approximately 75% gold for an 18K gold alloy ring. This purity makes a Platinum ring not only more dense with this precious metal (as it’s 95% pure Platinum), but it is also naturally hypoallergenic and ideal for those with sensitive skin. This is different from white gold, which is known to contain other metals in its alloy which may trigger an allergic reaction.

Additionally, this natural density and weight of Platinum – as Platinum is 25% heavier than gold – are characteristics that make it more durable than other jewelry metals. Platinum does not wear away and holds precious stones firmly and securely. In short, Platinum prongs are better protection for diamonds.

Like all precious metals, Platinum scratches. But when these scratches occur on a Platinum piece, they actually create a natural, rich patina on the ring that strengthens the metallurgical properties of the piece.

However, the scratch on a Platinum piece is merely a displacement of the metal and none of its volume is lost — unlike gold, which can flake away if scratched and wear thin over the lifetime of a ring. If a Platinum ring is dented (because it is a softer metal than gold), Platinum can often be reshaped, as none of its original volume is lost.

In addition to its strength and density, Platinum has another remarkable quality – pliability. Platinum is so pliable, that just one gram of the metal can be drawn to produce a fine wire over one mile (almost 2 km) long. This quality has enabled jewelers to create some amazing versatile Platinum designs, which could not be fashioned from other precious metals. And because Tacori’s designs are often so intricate with the hand-crafted details, Platinum is the optimal metal for our craftsmanship to truly shine.

In our opinion, everything looks better in Platinum.

Barry Verragio a true friend to KARATS and Akshay Anand

A bit late to post this great picture of a wonderful friend and fantastic jewelry designer Barry Verragio. Had the wonderful opportunity to be with him at our national convention in Las Vegas in June. I have long admired his work. Vincent Van Gogh once said “I dream of painting and then I paint my dream”; and for us in the ring world this could not be more true when it comes to creating rings that leaves us in an awe. A dream brought to life by my true and loyal friend Barry Verragio.

KARATS and Verragio’s partnership dates back to nearly a decade and our commitment to quality and fine craftsmanship is what makes both of us partners for life. I have also had the joy to know Barry on a personal level and I admire him as a human being.

Tennis Super Star Steffi Graf and Jumping Champion Ludger Beerbaum

Had the distinct pleasure and honor to be in company with Tennis Super Star Steffi Graf who was ranked World No. 1 during her career. Winning the United States Open, Wimbeldon, French Open and Australian Open. Including the Olympic Games and multiple other awards.

Horse Show Jumper Ludger Beerbaum is an international German Equestrian who competes in show jumping and has been ranked as the number 1 Show Jumper by the Federation for Equestrian Sports. He is also a four time Olympic Gold Medalist team and individual.

This incredible opportunity was brought to me by Longines, a Swiss watch brand that we carry at KARATS in Overland Park, Kansas. This great event took place in Omaha. A short drive from Kansas City where the brand ambassadors and international show jumpers were there to compete from all over the world. Pictured below is Steffi Graf, Akshay Anand from KARATS and Ludger Beerbaum.

A Great Joy !! My American Dream.

One of the greatest joys to me is to walk in everyday through these doors and see the proud American flag outside KARATS. It’s a reminder and an embodiment of unfettered American values. It is a proclamation of our unalienable rights, irrespective of who we are. It is a reminder that the creed of the founders is well alive everyday and that each morning I attempt to pursue those notions through hard work and embodying these solemn values. It’s by far not a perfect union but it is indeed the best we have.

Advocating for the children. CASA Johnson County Kansas

September 24, 2016. Overland Park, Kansas — Akshay Anand, Karats CEO, discusses volunteering for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and the roles that CASA volunteers have to serve. Akshay’s business ‘Karats’ is a premier jewelry and watch retailer in Kansas City. As a successful business owner, Akshay commits himself to serving the community and frequently participates in philanthropic activities.

CASA is an organization whose mission is to empower neglected and abused children with a volunteer’s voice in court by finding a safe and permanent home for every child. It was founded in 1977, after Seattle Superior Court Judge David Soukup conceived the idea of appointing volunteers to voice out the best interests of these children in court. 50 citizens responded after he made a request for volunteers, and this became the start of the CASA movement.

In 1985, Johnson County CASA became a project of the Tenth Judicial District of Kansas and the National Council of Jewish Women. The project’s purpose was to alleviate the overloaded court system by advocating for neglected or abused children in court. The organization started recruiting and training community volunteers to serve the best interests of these children, and this legacy continues in the present.

CASA volunteers serve an important role by monitoring the children’s situation and reporting findings to the court. Every year, CASA volunteers within Wyandotte and Johnson Counties dedicate over 15,000 hours to these children, with each hour focused on the goal of giving every child a chance at happiness as well as the stability that all children need in order to thrive.

CASA volunteers are all specially-trained citizens who have received 30 hours of official training before they are assigned a case. The training program’s curriculum combines in-person and online delivery of information. The training covers five sessions, and each session has about 3 hours of self-guided work that must be completed online before the volunteer attends a 3-hour in-person classroom session. Volunteers are educated on a variety of topics, such as an overview of courtroom procedure from judges, attorneys and social workers, symptoms and effects of neglect and abuse, early childhood development, and cultural diversity.

A CASA volunteer’s main responsibility is to meet with the child or a sibling group regularly to develop a relationship with the child and determine his or her needs. Volunteers also need to meet with other people who have information about the child, such as parents, foster parents, counselors, social workers, and teachers. They need to review all records pertaining to the child, and submit a written report to the judge before each court hearing that has information about the child—helping the judge make a better, more informed decision about the child’s future.

Believing that these children deserve a bright future, Akshay is encouraging citizens to volunteer for CASA and help neglected or abused children find happiness. To learn more about Akshay, visit http://akshayandyanand.tumblr.com/.

To A New Year

2015 was a great year for KARATS in a lot of aspects. Not only we won the Best Of Weddings from The Knot 3 years in a row ( 2014, 2015 and now 2016) we once again became the ONLY Tacori Platinum Partner for 2016 in Kansas. Verragio also renewed our Exclusive Verragio Premiere Boutique Status as its only store in entire Kansas City Metro. As KARATS continued to grow we also added prestigious watch brands such as Tudor, Longines, Luminox and more.

We did also endure some setbacks which included the 2 robberies at KARATS within 60 days. However, those setbacks did not keep us or our loyal customers from making it a great year. It actually has helped us further in implementing some changes, adding new and expanded security systems and close coordination with the great city of Overland Park we live in. It was also amazing to see how much the community cared for us and outpoured their love and support to KARATS and us. Family, friends, vendors and the City came forward to extend the most helping hand we have ever seen. To them we will always be grateful.

Personally, I’m also grateful for the growth and the opportunities we have had to continue growing KARATS. I have always believed in a great saying “The Journey To A Thousand Miles Begins With A Single Step”. KARATS is indeed a dream. It is larger than life and our American Dream that we have build with love and dedication. There is a fundamental difference between businesses. Those at the helm who see it merely as a business will be complacent but those that treat it like a love and passion will continue to invest in its growth for the greater good. Jim Collins in his book Good To Great said it right “Their ambition is first and foremost for the institution, not themselves.” As we continue to turn the pages of 2016 I cannot wait to see what is in-store for us. I am looking forward anxiously to what this year brings in many fronts personally and professionally.

Happy New Years and make this year the greatest ever. Our dreams are dreams for all of us to achieve together. Together we move mountains.
